How to Store Perfume & Fragrance Decants

How long decants last, the best storage conditions, when fragrance expires, how to tell if yours has gone off, and why glass vials outperform plastic.

How long does a perfume decant last?

A decant stored properly — in a glass vial with an airtight seal, kept cool, dark, and upright — will hold its scent for several years. Many collectors report decants in glass holding up well at the five-year mark and beyond. Decants in plastic vials degrade faster, often within 6–12 months, because plastic can interact with the fragrance.

How should I store my decants?

Cool, dark, upright, and away from temperature fluctuation. The three things that destroy perfume are heat, light (especially UV), and oxygen. Store decants in a drawer, cupboard, or original box — well away from windows, bathrooms (humidity and temperature swings), and radiators or heat vents. A stable, temperature-controlled environment is ideal. Refrigeration is debated; it can extend life for citrus-forward scents but the temperature cycling from repeatedly opening the fridge can cause as much harm as good.

Does perfume actually expire?

Yes, but slowly. Most fine fragrances stay true for 3 to 5 years from manufacture under normal storage. Higher-concentration formulations (parfum/extrait) can hold for longer — sometimes up to 10 years — because the higher oil content and lower alcohol-to-air ratio slow oxidation. Citrus-forward, aldehydic, and natural-heavy compositions degrade fastest; resinous, woody, and base-note-heavy compositions hold longest.

How can I tell if my perfume or decant has gone off?

The colour darkens or becomes cloudy, the alcohol smell becomes sharp or sour, the top notes flatten or disappear entirely, or the scent shifts toward something musty, vinegar-like, or unfamiliar. A fragrance that smelled bright and citric when new but now smells stale has oxidised. The base notes are typically the last to degrade, so a degraded fragrance often loses its opening but still has some recognisable warmth in the dry-down.

Are glass decant vials better than plastic?

Yes, significantly. Glass is chemically inert — it does not interact with the perfume oils or alcohol. Plastic can leach trace compounds into the fragrance, pick up plastic-like smells over time, and is more permeable, so the fragrance evaporates faster through the vial walls and seal. For anything you plan to keep longer than a few months, glass is the only sensible choice.
