What Is a Fragrance Decant?

Everything you need to know about fragrance decants: what they are, how they differ from samples and dupes, and whether buying and selling them is legal.

What is a fragrance decant?

A fragrance decant is a smaller portion of perfume that has been transferred from its original, full-size bottle into a separate vial or atomiser. The liquid inside is identical to what's in the original bottle — it has not been diluted, watered down, mixed, or reformulated. Decants typically range from 1ml up to 30ml and exist so people can try, travel with, or collect fragrances without committing to the cost of a full bottle, which for niche and luxury scents can run anywhere from $200 to $600 AUD or more.

What's the difference between a decant and a sample?

The two words are often used interchangeably, but there is a technical distinction. A sample is a small promotional vial — usually 1ml to 2ml — that the fragrance house itself manufactures and distributes. A decant is created by a third party (a retailer like Fragrance ADDX, or an enthusiast) who has purchased an authentic full-size bottle and transferred portions into smaller atomisers. Decants are generally available in a wider range of sizes (1ml to 30ml+), come in better spray atomisers, and cover fragrances a brand may never have released a sample of.

What's the difference between a decant and a dupe or clone?

A decant is the real fragrance, just in a smaller bottle. A dupe (or clone, or inspired-by fragrance) is an entirely different product made by a different manufacturer that attempts to smell similar to a well-known fragrance at a lower price point. Fragrance ADDX sells decants of genuine fragrances, not dupes. If a seller is offering a decant of a $500 niche fragrance for $5/ml with no traceable bottle source, the maths doesn't support it being the real thing.

Yes. Once you legally purchase a bottle of perfume, you own the liquid inside and can resell or repackage it. Reputable decanters purchase authentic bottles from authorised channels and resell smaller portions. The legal grey area only appears when sellers misrepresent counterfeit liquid as authentic — that's fraud, not decanting.

Fragrance ADDX decants every bottle from authentic originals — no dupes, no dilution. Browse the full range and start exploring the fragrances you've been curious about.
